Who is the "father" of lies?

The devil is the father of lies (John 8.44) and lying is a sin (Hebrews 6.18). Bearing false witness against someone, the ninth commandment (Exodus 20.16), is also a sin. It is never good to lie even if you think it might help someone. If you believe that God is sovereign (always in control) then you have no need to lie to help someone. Who is more able to help a person in need, you telling a lie or God who created the universe?

"You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it" (John 8:4).
